Where’s The System Admin..
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008Yea, so where’s the system administrator when you need one?!? Shared my support work time fiddling with our server at office.
Atlantis rolled over and died last week.. I’m now trying to raise if from the dead.. Sounds catchy eh?!? Being the support engineer, slightly a mentor and mostly a system administrator has really taken a toll on me today. Standing in a server room is never a fun thing to do.. Especially when the keyboard and the monitor is weirdly configured..
Oh well, it’s part of a very big learning process on how to setup a server for people to use. Learned something today also. I was struggling on how to set $JAVA_HOME globally. I’ve always set my desktop’s $JAVA_HOME at ~/.bashrc which is not a good method of doing so. Googling taught me to set it at /etc/bash.bashrc.

What else.. What else..
Well, here’s something that would put a smile on your face:
Redirection..
Monday, October 20th, 2008What do you do when your revamped banking system gets too much complaints??

You redirect it back to your old system! Lol, what jokers!
Other records of failures:
The guys behind the new Maybank2U, please read
Zippy internet banking, anyone?
I do have one experience with the new system. When logging in with the new layout, there was a “nifty” looking .gif which spun around letting me know the login was being processed. After logging in, clicking on different links still showed the “nifty” looking .gif… BUT IT WAS AT THE SAME DAMN PIXEL AS THE LAST!! Luckily the words overlapped the image or nothing would be clickable.. Gosh, what an EPIC PH41LUR3 by Maybank2u!! Too bad the system was reverted back to the old system. Could not get screenshots to prove myself.. Oh well..
Updates..
Sunday, October 5th, 2008Guess it’s about time that I sit down and do an update again! For the past week, the goal at work was to reach the next support level which I am but two points away! Seesh.. How tough is it to get those points.. Work for this week was largely scarce. Most of the people in office are off in conjunction with the Hari Raya holidays. Did have to do the night shift work on Monday as one was on leave and another one on medical leave. 1st day of Hari Raya was spent at church installing fans, lights and wire trunking from 10AM till 9.30PM. Hiding wires is not fun!! Neither is it fun to do it outdoors at 7PM when mosquitoes are taking pot-shots at your leg.. Buggers..
Swapping to Ubuntu on my home desktop has caused me two specific problems:
1. Unable to hear any audio from Flash + Firefox which equals to ultimate stress. Checking out my solutions did not work. Removing and reinstalling Firefox and the Flash plugins did not help. But suddenly this morning, things started to work with libflashsupport, flashplugin-nonfree and a few tweeks to System > Preferences > Sound.
2. Utopia Angel will not run on Wine. Now this one, I do not have the means and the expertise to even comprehend on how to fix it.. Dammit. Why the hell does everything have to be built for Windows..
New stuff for this week and last month:
1. Dell Multimedia Keyboard
2. Ubuntu OS on desktop
3. Brisingr - The latest book to the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini
4. Something bigger and better than all that I had ever owned. Stay tuned!!
Moving on..
Thursday, October 2nd, 2008My first post from:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092510 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.3
Windows finally decided to give up on me. Therefore, I have given up on it too! Eat dirt Windows!!
Bad Memories..
Saturday, September 27th, 2008Yea, memory hurts.. Bad memories hurts.. JVM memory management hurts more.. Illustration below..
JIRA 3.13 gave me a headache.. Why is the Total PermGen Memory higher than the defined PermSize or even MaxPermSize?!? This headache lasted for a few days till..
Troubleshooting?!? Today, I set the MaxPermGen to 32MB, viewed a copy of a huge workflow and… PermGen Error was manifested. Conclusion, the PermGen memory IS and INDEED 32MB.
The total non-heap memory consists of:
- “PS Perm Gen” - 131,072 kbytes (Max)
- “Code Cache” - 49,152 kbytes (Max)
- Total - 180,224 kbytes = 176MB
Woohoo!! After some advice from Nick, I ran JConsole to find out what’s happening with the memory in JIRA. JIRA’s PermGen memory is defined by the MemoryMXBean. The getNonHeapMemoryUsage() ruins the data by collecting all non heap memory displayed above..
